Old man of the sea

From Dragon Quest Wiki

The Old man of the sea is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest V. They are wizened seafaring sorcerers that don seashell hats on their heads.

Characteristics[edit]

The old man of the sea is a humanoid monster with the appearance of an elderly man with tan skin, light orange-colored beards with an enormous handlebar mustache, and pointy eyebrows. They wear long flowing fuchsia-colored robes that cover their entire bodies, their signature grey conch shells on their noggins, and they have their spindly hands outstretched in the air, ready to cast spells. The wizards command the very elements of the sea and storm at their fingertips, summoning blasts of ice and strong whirlwinds with their magic and calling forth thunderbolts to assail any adventurers at sea.

Etymology[edit]

Their name in Japanese is probably a reference to Nereus of Greek mythology who gave birth to the Nereids. Their English name is probably a reference to "The Old Man of the Sea" from the Iliad, who is also a father to the Nereids, and can therefore be speculated to be Nereus - this is unclear however as he is not mentioned by name.
